Car Trailer Insurance in Case of Theft

What would happen if your car trailer was stolen? Or if you didn't notice it was missing for days or even weeks? A likely scenario could be if you were at an exhibition, and left your car trailer parked up while you were working, returning later to discover that it was gone. These scenarios can be a nightmare if your only plan is to rely on the the police, but with car trailer insurance you could be back on the road again very quickly with a hired trailer. If the trailer is found later, the insurer will give you a new one or instruct an agent to repair the recovered one. If it isn't found in a reasonable amount of time, the trailer will be replaced.

The odds of recovering a stolen car trailer are very slim. It almost never happens, but car trailers go missing nearly every day in the UK, and in other parts of Europe. Trailers get pinched from driveways, parking facilities, and even more alarmingly from locked garages. They can be stolen at night while you are asleep, or when you are away on business. Generally thieves, hope that you won't notice right away so that they have plenty of time to make a clean escape.

One of the most common forms of car trailer theft frequently occurs when it is obvious that the owner is going to be away from the trailer for some time, for instance in a seminar, race event of some other kind of function. Thieves simply detach the trailer from the towing vehicle and attach the trailer to another vehicle. It is simply amazing, but most thieves work in plain sight, in well lit parking facilities, operating on the assumption that strangers will not even realise it isn’t their trailer, or question what they are doing. This brazen tactic works more often than not, as passers by ignore what is seemingly obviously going on. Car trailers can be very easy to steal unless owners take some pretty serious preventative measures.

How to Prevent Theft

• Get a hitch ball with a keyed lock.
• Park the trailer in well lit areas.
• Alarm systems work to alert you when your trailer is tampered with.
• Never store valuable items on your trailer.
• Always unload the trailer, so that no one can take off with both your car and your trailer.
• Inexpensive electronic transponders are available which can help to locate your trailer.
• There are many types of metal legs, wheel blocks and chain locks which can be implemented to prevent the trailer from being stolen easily.

How to Report your Trailer Stolen

Be sure to inform the police, getting a written report. Also your car insurance agency, as soon as you discover that your car trailer is missing. You may have to be persistent with police. It is not uncommon for officers to wait up to 12 hours to respond to a stolen car trailer complaint.

Most people have to call the police several times to get action. There are reports that anything up to seven calls are a reasonable average. This is before the officer actually arrives. Even when police do respond in a timely manner it is highly unlikely that they will actually recover your trailer, and even if they do find it, it could be months before you can claim it. When a trailer is returned to an owner it is usually badly damaged.
